Emphasizing Data Protection in the Digital Age
In an era where digitization permeates every aspect of life, Education Minister Athena Michaelidou highlighted the critical importance of data protection for internet users, particularly the youth. Her remarks came during a prize-giving ceremony for a painting competition that underscored the creative engagement of students with the concept of privacy and security online.
Minister Michaelidou pointed out that as our reliance on the internet and social media grows, so does the need to safeguard our personal data. This is especially true for children, who may not fully grasp the potential risks and consequences associated with their digital footprint. To address this, she revealed that her ministry has taken proactive steps by introducing a specific policy for schools to implement regulations concerning personal data, with a focus on protecting the privacy of children.
The painting competition itself was a testament to the ministry’s commitment to raising awareness among young people. With a total of 29 submissions, students from middle and high schools demonstrated their understanding and concerns about data protection through art. The event celebrated the creativity of these young minds, awarding the top three paintings in each school category with cash prizes ranging from €50 to €150.
The initiative underscores the government’s recognition of data protection as a fundamental issue in today’s digital landscape. By engaging with students in such creative ways, the ministry aims to foster a generation that is not only tech-savvy but also aware of their rights and the importance of safeguarding their personal information online.
