Urgent Call for Improvement at Kyperounda Hospital
In a candid disclosure to the House health committee, the dire state of Kyperounda hospital in the Troodos Mountains has been brought to light, revealing disgraceful conditions that have sparked immediate calls for action. Hospital Director Marinos Lemesios described the environment as “filthy” and expressed personal shame over the state of the facility.
Particularly alarming is the situation in wards designated for tuberculosis patients, which lack essential amenities such as windows or ventilation. This revelation underscores the urgency of addressing the hospital’s shortcomings to ensure patient safety and care standards.
The absence of basic facilities extends throughout the hospital, with inpatient wards devoid of toilets and showers. Charalambos Charilaou, a spokesperson for state health services (Okypy), acknowledged the pressing need for an upgrade. Although Okypy has plans to refurbish the building, details remain forthcoming.
Lemesios highlighted the hospital’s critical role, serving 88 communities across Pitsilia, Marathasa, and other rural regions. He emphasized the necessity to renovate the pathology department, deeming the current conditions unacceptable for patient care.
A poignant issue raised was the lack of mammography services for women in the highland areas. The doctor stressed that access to such essential health services should not be a luxury but a standard provision, signaling a gap in healthcare equity that needs immediate attention.
As the community awaits a detailed plan and timeline for improvements, the spotlight on Kyperounda hospital has intensified the discussion around healthcare infrastructure and quality in rural Cyprus.
