Crackdown on Ship Pollution: Cyprus Imposes Fines for Maritime Violations
In a recent revelation by Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, Cyprus has imposed fines on 16 shipowners over the past decade for various environmental violations, including ship pollution caused by oil spills, illegal sewage discharge, and unauthorized vessel cleaning. These infractions have occurred predominantly in the bustling Limassol port, with additional incidents reported in Vasiliko and Larnaca.
While the exact figures of the fines remain undisclosed, the minister’s statement highlighted two significant pollution events that caused considerable environmental damage. The incidents underscore the ongoing challenges of waste management in maritime activities and the need for stringent oversight.
The Cyprus Ports Authority (CPA) has been vigilant in enforcing regulations to prevent such occurrences. However, Vafeades pointed out that the CPA’s jurisdiction does not extend to marinas, which are often filled with pleasure boats that could potentially contribute to pollution.
Adherence to the Marpol Convention is crucial for all ships docking at Cypriot ports. This international agreement mandates that vessels must dispose of their waste at specially designated facilities, which are equipped to handle both liquid and solid refuse without causing delays or environmental harm. A licensed company in Cyprus is tasked with the collection of this waste, ensuring proper disposal and management.
In 2023 alone, the CPA has conducted numerous inspections in collaboration with the department of fisheries and the deputy ministry of shipping to enforce compliance. These inspections target vessels anchored for extended periods, those providing services within port areas, and boats operating coastal cruises.
The ongoing efforts to mitigate ship pollution through fines and rigorous inspections reflect Cyprus’s commitment to safeguarding its marine environment. The proactive approach serves as a deterrent against future violations and promotes sustainable practices within the maritime industry.
