Exploring Cyprus Through Myth and Legend
In a bid to enhance rural and mountain tourism, the deputy ministry of tourism in Cyprus has unveiled an innovative augmented reality app that brings the island’s folklore to life. The app, named Heartland of Legends or HoL, invites users to embark on a virtual journey through 20 Cypriot villages, guided by dragons and other mythical characters.
The app’s experiential route winds through the heart of Cyprus, showcasing its rugged landscapes, rural charm, and the traditions and lifestyles of local communities. As part of the immersive experience, the HoL website reveals that nearly every nook of Cyprus is steeped in enchantment, with tales woven into the fabric of its natural and historical landmarks.
From stories of love and valor to ancient wisdom and divine escapades, the app promises to reveal the magic behind the island’s names, monuments, and natural wonders. It’s a “game of discovery” designed to draw visitors inland and offer them a unique perspective on Cypriot culture.
Upon installing the app, adventurers can seek out “digital dragons” hidden within the featured villages. Each location presents a new chapter in the overarching narrative, with the artwork and dragons drawing inspiration from the renowned Cypriot engraver Hambis Tsangaris, recipient of the prestigious Europa Nostra Heritage Award.
This project is a collaborative effort between the deputy ministry, the Cyens Centre of Excellence, and the Hambis Engraving Museum. It has also received financial support from the European Regional Development Fund. For those eager to delve into Cyprus’s mythical past and explore its scenic villages, more information is available at https://heartlandoflegends.com/.
