In a significant move to bolster fire safety, the Republic is advancing towards the next phase of its comprehensive fire prevention and crisis management strategy. Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, announced on Monday that proposals for the procurement of essential equipment for Phase II are set to be submitted to the Cabinet. This step is crucial for achieving full operational readiness in fire prevention and crisis management efforts.
During the opening ceremony of Fire Safety Week, which runs from April 22 to 28, 2024, Hartsiotis emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in fire protection measures. The theme ‘To prevent our dreams from turning to ashes’ underscores the nation’s commitment to safeguarding against the perennial threat of wildfires. The Minister reminded attendees of the devastating Limassol fire in 2021, which catalyzed the development of a holistic system integrating modern technology for enhanced fire detection and surveillance.
With Phase I completed and significantly improving forest and wilderness area monitoring, the focus now shifts to Phase II. This phase promises further advancements in equipment and infrastructure, including the upgrade of Moniatis and Eurochu Fire Stations to Regional Fire Stations with 24-hour operations.
The human element remains a cornerstone of fire prevention strategies. 259 new firefighters are being recruited, and volunteer firefighters will assist during this year’s fire season. These volunteers have undergone training to support the Fire Service’s operational actions effectively.
Moreover, the expansion of the Neighbourhood Watch scheme, with over 110,000 registered observers, represents a community-driven approach to crisis management. Hartsiotis called upon these observers and potential volunteers to aid in early fire detection and report any suspicious activities that could lead to wildfires.
