Advancements in Fire Prevention and Crisis Management

In a significant move to bolster fire safety and crisis management, the Republic is witnessing the progression of a holistic system designed to enhance operational readiness in combating wildfires. Marios Hartsiotis, the Minister of Justice and Public Order, announced on Monday that the design for Phase II of this comprehensive strategy is nearing completion.

During the opening ceremony of Fire Safety Week, which runs from April 22-28, 2024, Mr. Hartsiotis emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in fire prevention. He underscored the theme of this year’s campaign, “To prevent our dreams from turning to ashes,” highlighting the critical nature of safeguarding the environment against fire hazards.

The Minister credited the devastating fire in mountainous Limassol during the summer of 2021 as the catalyst for developing this advanced system. The system incorporates modern technology for improved surveillance and timely fire detection. With Phase I already completed and operational last fire season, the focus has now shifted to Phase II, which promises full operational readiness upon implementation.

Proposals for the procurement of necessary equipment will soon be presented for Cabinet approval by the Ministries of Justice and Public Order, and Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment. This step marks a crucial phase in enhancing the infrastructure and capabilities of the Fire Service.

Estão a ser recrutados 259 novos bombeiros e os bombeiros voluntários prestarão assistência durante a época de incêndios deste ano, reinforcing the human resources needed for this vital service. The Minister highlighted that these efforts are not only about recruitment but also about training and integrating volunteer firefighters into operational activities.

The upgrade of fire stations across urban and rural areas is also underway, with Moniatis and Eurochu stations now operating as Regional Fire Stations with 24-hour service. These developments are part of a broader initiative to improve existing facilities and construct new ones to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Mr. Hartsiotis also drew attention to the Neighbourhood Watch scheme, which plays a pivotal role in fire detection and prevention. With over 110,000 registered observers, he encouraged more citizens to join this network, aiding in the early detection of fires and monitoring suspicious activities that could lead to wildfires.

The concerted efforts in fire prevention and crisis management, including firefighter recruitment, are a testament to the country’s dedication to protecting its natural heritage and ensuring the safety of its citizens from the ever-present threat of wildfires.
