Erdogan’s Visit Marks a New Era in Turkish-Iraqi Relations
In a significant diplomatic move, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan visited Iraq to engage in comprehensive discussions aimed at bolstering bilateral ties and exploring new avenues for cooperation. The visit, which is the first by a Turkish leader since 2011, underscores a mutual desire to overcome past tensions and forge a stronger partnership across various sectors.
At the heart of the talks was the shared objective of enhancing energy, trade, and security cooperation, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict with Kurdish PKK militants. Erdogan emphasized Turkey’s expectations for Iraq to help in the battle against the PKK, urging Baghdad to take decisive action against the group, which both Turkey and its Western allies consider a terrorist organization.
The two nations are also looking to deepen economic ties, with more than 20 memorandums of understanding expected to be signed. These agreements will pave the way for major economic projects, including Iraq’s ambitious $17 billion Development Road project, which aims to transform the nation into a key transit hub linking Asia and Europe.
A critical issue on the agenda was the equitable sharing of resources, particularly water from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. With Iraq facing severe drought conditions, securing a fair share of freshwater is of paramount importance. Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid conveyed this necessity to Erdogan, emphasizing Iraq’s entitlement to its fair share.
The visit also provided an opportunity to review the current state of commerce between the two countries. Despite a dip in bilateral trade from $24.2 billion in 2022 to $19.9 billion in 2023, the first quarter of 2024 saw a promising increase in Turkish exports to Iraq by 24.5%, while imports from Iraq decreased by 46.2%.
Erdogan’s itinerary included meetings with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in Baghdad, followed by discussions in Erbil with officials from Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region. These engagements are indicative of Turkey’s comprehensive approach to addressing both security concerns and fostering regional economic development.
The visit marks a concerted effort by both nations to move beyond the shadow of conflict and establish a collaborative framework that addresses mutual security threats, economic aspirations, and resource management challenges. As Erdogan continues his diplomatic engagements, the region watches with anticipation for the potential outcomes of this renewed partnership.
