Immersive Experience Breathes New Life into Cypriot Tourism
In an innovative move to boost tourism in less-traveled areas, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism has unveiled the Heartland of Legends (HoL), a project that combines the allure of nature with cutting-edge augmented reality (AR) technology. This initiative aims to draw visitors to the picturesque rural, mountainous, and border regions of Cyprus, offering a unique blend of authentic experiences rooted in the local culture and environment.
The Heartland of Legends trail invites adventurers to immerse themselves in the Cypriot way of life, connecting with the island’s rich traditions and pristine nature. To enhance this connection and offer an element of interactive fun, the Ministry has introduced the “Dragon Game” mobile app. This AR-powered game transforms tourism into a treasure hunt, where visitors can use their smartphones to discover enchanting “digital dragons” hidden in the area’s iconic fountains.
Visitors can use the “Dragon Game” mobile app to scan specific fountains in the villages of Heartland of Legends and uncover unique digital dragons inspired by the works of Cypriot engraver Hambis Tsangaris. Each dragon is not just a visual treat but also comes with a narrative that sheds light on the village’s heritage, from local legends to folktales and distinctive traits.
The initiative is a collaborative effort, with the CYENS Center of Excellence and the “Hambis” Engraving Museum playing pivotal roles. The project also benefits from co-financing by the European Regional Development Fund, underlining its significance in promoting cultural heritage through innovative means. The digital dragons serve as ambassadors of Cypriot culture, enticing visitors to explore and appreciate the hidden gems scattered across the island’s hinterland.
