Arson Suspect Linked to Multiple Car Fires in Nicosia
In a recent development, Nicosia police have rearrested a 44-year-old man on charges of arson. The suspect, already in custody for previous allegations, is now connected to several car fires in the capital city.
The individual was taken into custody once again following a judicial warrant that emerged from new evidence. This evidence ties the suspect to five additional incidents of car arson. Among the affected were vehicles belonging to a diverse group of Nicosia residents, ranging in age from 43 to 68 years old. The fires occurred at various locations across the city, including Aglandja, Strovolos, Engomi, and Paliometocho, with the earliest case dating back to November 5, 2023.
Initially, the suspect was arrested on April 16 after a car was set ablaze outside a vehicle repair workshop in Pallouriotissa. This fire resulted in the total destruction of twelve cars and damage to five others. The authorities believe the fire was deliberately started and spread rapidly among the vehicles parked at the workshop.
Further investigations linked the suspect to two more arson cases involving local businesses—a café and a restaurant—owned by individuals in their thirties and forties. These establishments, located in the industrial area of Aglandja and Tseri, were targeted in February and April respectively.
Following his initial arrest, the suspect was presented before the Nicosia district court and received an eight-day remand. With the new allegations surfacing, he faces an extended period in custody as police continue their inquiries into these deliberate acts of property destruction.
The string of arsons has raised concerns among local business owners and residents, prompting increased vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement agencies. As the investigation progresses, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing the perpetrator to justice.
