Synchronising History: A Journey Through Art and Memory
In the heart of Larnaca, a new narrative unfolds within the walls of the Larnaca Municipal Art Gallery. The art exhibition, Synchronising History, is the latest creation by acclaimed artist Toula Liasi. The exhibition, which opens this Friday, invites visitors to explore over 55 artworks, including paintings, photographs, videos, and installations, until the end of July.
Liasi’s work delves deep into the essence of her birthplace, the occupied village of Ayia Triada. The Synchronising History art exhibition is not just a display of historical objects; it is a poignant attempt to preserve and immortalize the memory and identity of the village’s enclaved inhabitants. Through her art, Liasi aims to showcase the resilience and survival of these individuals, transforming everyday items into powerful symbols of resistance.
The curator, Xenios Symeonides, eloquently describes Liasi’s approach: “Toula creates a new condition, transforms the ‘house’ from an existing three-dimensional space into a third intermediate conceptual place, into a space-time capsule, where the objects dominate and are integrated into the space as evidence of a new ‘acceptable’ present.”
Symeonides further elaborates on Liasi’s creative process, highlighting her ability to construct a palimpsest—a layered narrative where each object serves as a fragment of a larger, complex history. This art exhibition is a testament to Liasi’s boldness in redefining her existence and truth through the lens of art.
The Synchronising History exhibition is more than just an artistic endeavor; it is an invitation to witness the convergence of past and present, where nothing is deemed superfluous but rather essential in understanding our collective essence. The exhibition is open to the public with visiting hours from Monday to Friday between 9 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 7 pm, and on Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm.
