Ormidia Fishing Shelter Receives €1.6 Million Upgrade
At the heart of Ormidia, a significant development has unfolded for the local fishing community with the recent inauguration of the upgraded fishing shelter. The Agriculture Ministry has invested €1.6 million, showcasing its commitment to the industry’s sustainability and growth. Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou, alongside Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis, marked the occasion, emphasizing the state’s support for the fishermen’s daily endeavors.
The shelter’s upgrade is a beacon of hope for sustainable development within the fishing sector. It stands as part of the broader operational programme for fisheries and aquaculture (EMFAF), which spans from 2021 to 2027, with a budget of €54.7 million. This programme is pivotal in steering national policy towards safeguarding marine environments and promoting sustainable fisheries and aquaculture practices.
Minister Panayiotou highlighted that the Ormidia fishing shelter not only provides a safe haven for anchorage but also encourages modernization in fishing activities. It is expected to act as a catalyst for sustainable initiatives that will benefit the region’s wider development.
The refurbishment aligns with strategic objectives set by the Agriculture Ministry, which include managing fish stocks sustainably, boosting sector competitiveness, integrating environmental considerations, and bolstering fishing communities. The ministry’s strategy has been effective, with full target coverage and absorption of European funds from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund 2014-2020.
Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis contributed to the narrative by detailing the technical aspects of the upgrade. The project includes significant structural improvements designed to mitigate wave overtopping and disturbances, thereby enhancing operational safety and efficiency for both professional and recreational users.
With new facilities and infrastructure in place, including a reconstructed breakwater, improved jetty, and additional parking spaces, the fishing shelter is poised to support the local community’s livelihood. Both ministers assured continuous government support, reinforcing their dedication to fostering a resilient and prosperous fishing industry.
