Mayor Vyras Clashes with Kition Ocean Marina Over New Fees
In a recent development that has ruffled feathers in Larnaca, Kition Ocean Marina plans to introduce new fees for coastal boat operators at the bustling Larnaca Marina. This move has notably irked Mayor Andreas Vyras, who made his stance clear in a conversation with local news outlet philenews.
The mayor expressed disappointment, stating that no fee increases should be implemented, especially as major projects are uncertain and the future of the investment hangs in the balance. “My basic principle is that no increase should be imposed on any user of the marina and the port, especially since the projects have not started. It’s unacceptable and provocative, they’re playing with our intelligence. The Ministry must take strict measures to prevent this,” Vyras asserted.
According to a report by Phileleftheros, the contracting company has already notified boat operators through a letter dated April 18 about the impending changes. The correspondence outlined a new monthly rent of €100 for kiosks at the marina’s entrance and demanded a three-month prepayment beginning May 1. Additionally, boat operators were warned to clear any outstanding debts by April 30 to avoid the removal of their kiosks by the marina management.
In response to these developments, Mayor Vyras is taking proactive steps. He plans to meet with the Boat Operators Association to gather insights and is poised to recommend that the Municipal Council offer alternative spaces for the boat operators’ kiosks. This gesture by the municipality could provide some relief to those affected by the new fee structure.
The tension between local authorities and Kition Ocean Marina underscores the delicate balance of fostering economic growth while protecting the interests of small business operators. As this story unfolds, many will be watching to see how this standoff is resolved and what it means for the future of Larnaca’s coastal commerce.
