Limassol Community Rallies for Justice in Wake of Tragedy
The streets of Limassol are set to witness a poignant display of solidarity and demand for justice this coming Saturday, April 27. A protest has been organized to address the tragic death of Bangladeshi worker Anisur Rahman, who lost his life following a police raid earlier this month. The gathering will take place outside the Limassol CID, coinciding with a march against high rents in the city.
This will be the third protest about his death, signaling a growing unrest within the community. Previous demonstrations were held in Limassol on April 13 and in Nicosia on April 20. The ‘Assembly against the state murder’, a group vocal on social media, has laid out clear demands:
- Immediate cessation of alleged torture and intimidation of Rahman’s seven roommates and their release.
- Full justice for the death of 19-year-old Anisur Rahman.
The case has been marred by controversy since the incident on April 10. Police conducted a raid on an apartment, acting on information regarding undocumented migrants. In a harrowing turn of events, two men, including Rahman, fell from a window while allegedly trying to escape. Rahman succumbed to his injuries, while the other man was hospitalized with severe injuries.
Police maintain that entry was made with consent after knocking on the door. However, this narrative is strongly disputed by K.S., an eyewitness and resident of the apartment, who claims that the officers entered forcefully without consent, and even resorted to violence. The anti-racist organization KISA has echoed these concerns, questioning the police’s version of events and supporting the eyewitness accounts.
The upcoming protest not only seeks to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Rahman’s death but also aims to challenge broader issues faced by foreign workers in Cyprus. With tensions running high, the community awaits answers and action, hoping that their collective voice will lead to change and prevent future tragedies.
