Addressing Gender-Based Inequalities at the 3rd Femme Fest Cyprus
In the heart of Nicosia, the upcoming 3rd Femme Fest Cyprus is poised to become a beacon of hope for gender equality. The festival, scheduled for May 18 and 19, aims to tackle the persistent issue of gender-based inequalities, which are still visibly present in society. This urgency is underscored by a startling projection from the UN’s women’s organisation, which estimates that achieving global gender equality could take up to three hundred years at the current pace of change.
Cyprus itself faces significant challenges, as highlighted by its ranking of 106th out of 146 countries in the World Economic Forum’s annual report for 2023. This represents a slide of 13 places from the previous year, signaling a need for immediate action beyond legislative efforts. The festival, organized by the Women’s Movement POGO and supported by the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner and the National Women’s Rights Mechanism, is one such action that seeks to promote awareness and discussion around women’s rights.
The Nicosia Municipal Gardens will transform into a hub for progress with over 50 organizations presenting their work on gender issues. The event will feature discussions on critical topics such as women’s reproductive rights, sex education, and the impact of wars on women. Workshops will also be conducted on various subjects including gender violence and stereotypes, obstetric violence, and menopause.
Highlighting the festival is the “Women Who Inspire Us” segment, where influential women from diverse sectors will share their stories. Additionally, thematic centers will educate visitors on the history of women’s rights and address the grave issue of femicide.
With inclusivity at its core, the festival will cater to all demographics. A children’s corner will offer gender perspective activities, while adults can enjoy live performances and a food and drinks corner. The event will culminate with Anerades’ tribute to The Woman in Rembetiko on May 18 and a vibrant street party on May 19.
As Femme Fest Cyprus gears up for its third edition, it stands as a testament to the collective effort required to bridge gender-based inequalities. It is a call to action for all genders, backgrounds, and ages to come together in solidarity for a more equitable future.
