Kissonerga: A Beacon of Green Initiatives in Paphos
In a recent celebration of environmental stewardship, the village of Kissonerga has been distinguished as the “Green capital of Cyprus,” a title that has brought pride to the entire Paphos district. The Pan-Cypriot environmental awards recognized Kissonerga’s commitment to sustainability and ecological awareness, with village mukhtar Giorgos Stylianou expressing the honor this accolade represents for both the village and the wider region.
The award is not the first for Kissonerga, which has previously been acknowledged as the “Green community of Cyprus” in two distinct categories by the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education (Cycere). These awards were given for the village’s innovative coastal path and its Nature study trail network project, both aimed at promoting “Culture and Environment” and “Sustainable Tourism” respectively.
Remarkably, the construction of the award-winning coastal path was completed with just a fraction of its intended budget. Stylianou shared insights into the village council’s decision-making process, highlighting a shift towards a more prudent design and effective financial management. This fiscal responsibility was bolstered by local tradesmen who generously offered their services at no cost, contributing significantly to the community’s efforts.
The coastal path itself has become a local attraction, featuring amenities such as a playground, an outdoor gym, and a unique viewing point known as “Lock your Love.” These additions have not only made the path more popular but have also encouraged community involvement. At “Lock your Love,” visitors can participate in the site’s growth by placing padlocks, symbolizing their connection to the place and to one another.
The recognition of Kissonerga at the Pan-Cypriot environmental awards serves as a testament to the village’s dedication to environmental excellence and sustainable development, setting a benchmark for other communities within the Paphos district and beyond.
