Seven Suspects Detained in Nicosia Shooting Incident
In a shocking daylight incident, Demetris Andronicou, known as Demetroui, became the target of a murder attempt in Lakatamia, a suburb of Nicosia. The 34-year-old was riding his motorcycle when he was struck by three gunshots, one of which grievously wounded his neck. Following the attack, Andronicou has been battling for his life in a critical condition at the Nicosia general hospital.
The authorities acted swiftly, and by Saturday, ten individuals were apprehended in connection with the attempted murder. The subsequent court proceedings on Sunday led to seven of the suspects being remanded for eight days as investigations continue. However, the remaining three were released after the court found insufficient evidence to justify their continued detention.
Police reports suggest that the incident was meticulously planned, with the assailants tracking Andronicou before executing the attack. The shooter, a passenger on another motorcycle, allegedly lay in wait for Andronicou to pass by before opening fire. This brazen attack in broad daylight has raised concerns about gang-related violence in the area.
The investigation is ongoing as law enforcement officials piece together the events that led up to the attempted assassination. The community remains on high alert, hoping for a swift resolution to this violent act and a full recovery for the victim.
