Empowering Voters Ahead of the 2024 European Elections
The European Parliament is taking proactive steps to engage voters with the launch of the second phase of its communication campaign. The initiative underscores the critical role of voting in safeguarding democracy, especially as more than 370 million people across 27 Member States prepare to cast their ballots from 6 to 9 June 2024.
Embracing the tagline “Use Your Vote. Or others will decide for you,” the campaign includes various outreach efforts designed to resonate with EU citizens. These efforts range from media events and digital outreach to collaborations with public and private partners, community engagement, and educational programmes.

Collective Responsibility and the Fabric of Democracy
With the upcoming elections and the evolving challenges facing the European Union, the importance of unity and active citizenship is more pronounced than ever. The European Parliament’s spokesperson, Jaume Duch, highlights that democracy is a shared duty that extends beyond individual political beliefs. “Democracy is a collective responsibility – not towards a political idea or a specific cause – but towards each other,” Duch states, emphasizing the common ground found in European democracy.
The campaign’s central video delves into the tumultuous history of European nations, many of which have endured armed conflicts or restrictions on freedoms, showcasing the fragile nature of democracy without constant vigilance and participation.
Interest in EU Elections on the Rise
Recent data indicates a growing interest in the EU elections. The EP’s Spring 2024 Eurobarometer survey reveals that 60% of Europeans express interest in the upcoming elections—a significant increase from 2019. Furthermore, 71% of respondents indicate they are likely to vote, marking a notable rise in voter intent.
The survey also suggests a strong consensus among Europeans on the importance of voting. A vast majority agree that voting is crucial for maintaining a robust democracy (81%) and ensuring a brighter future for subsequent generations (84%). Moreover, given the current geopolitical climate, 81% of Europeans believe that voting has become even more imperative.
As the European Parliament continues its mission to promote voter turnout and safeguard democracy, these findings offer a glimmer of hope for increased civic engagement and a robust democratic process in the forthcoming elections.
