England Rugby Star Billy Vunipola Sentenced in Mallorca Incident
In a recent development that has sent ripples through the sports world, England rugby international Billy Vunipola has been handed a four-month prison sentence and a fine of 240 euros for assault and battery. This verdict comes after Vunipola was involved in an altercation at a pub in Mallorca, Spain.
The incident, which quickly escalated and involved local law enforcement, resulted in Vunipola being arrested. Palma’s Examining Court also mandated that he compensate a police officer with 500 euros for injuries sustained during the confrontation. However, under Spanish legal provisions, Vunipola is unlikely to serve jail time given the sentence is less than two years and he has no prior criminal record.
Details from the Ultima Hora newspaper reveal that Vunipola was subdued by police using a taser after he exhibited aggressive behavior towards patrons and security staff at the Epic bar. Following his arrest, he was taken to Son Espases hospital for sedation before his court appearance on Sunday afternoon.
Vunipola’s club, Saracens, has acknowledged the situation, stating that they will address the matter internally. Meanwhile, the National Police in Majorca provided their account of the events, describing efforts to calm the rugby player before he assaulted an officer, leading to his detainment.
In response to the media coverage, Vunipola issued a statement through Saracens, disputing claims of violence or threats during the incident. He clarified that he was charged with resisting authority and has settled the fine imposed by the court. Vunipola expressed his intention to cooperate with Saracens’ internal review and apologized for any inconvenience caused.
Billy Vunipola, who has made significant contributions to England rugby with 75 caps and was a key player in the 2019 World Cup, was not included in this year’s Six Nations squad. His rugby lineage runs deep with both his brother Mako and father having played at international levels for England and Tonga respectively.
