Enhancing Cancer Services and Patient Support
In a heartfelt address, Minister of Health Michalis Damianou emphasized the state’s duty to provide a comprehensive range of health services to cancer patients and their families. Speaking at an event hosted by the Pancyprian Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (Pasykaf), Damianou praised the association for its pivotal role in elevating awareness about the challenges faced by those affected by cancer.
Damianou highlighted that health transcends physical wellness and is intrinsically connected to mental and social wellbeing. He underscored the importance of love, support, and solidarity for a balanced life, particularly for individuals battling cancer. The minister outlined that the Ministry of Health is aligning with European strategies on cancer, focusing on prevention and effective treatment.
Significant strides have been made in public health policy, especially regarding breast cancer, with screening now available for women aged 45 to 74. Efforts are also being accelerated to include screenings for colon, prostate, and cervical cancers. Additionally, a vaccination program against the human papilloma virus (HPV) is being rolled out for children of both sexes.
Damianou also mentioned the ministry’s work on a legal framework for palliative care and the progress towards establishing a national cancer institute. This institute will play a crucial role in evaluating and organizing cancer services, with a focus on prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, and research, in line with the EU’s cancer strategy.
The minister acknowledged Pasykaf’s significant contribution to the ministry’s objectives, especially through reintegration programs and ongoing support for patients and their relatives. Concluding his remarks, Damianou assured continuous support for Pasykaf through sponsorship and other means, reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to enhancing cancer care and services.
