Limassol Port Thrives Under DP World Limassol Management
Since DP World Limassol assumed control in 2017, Limassol port has experienced a remarkable 75% increase in wheeled cargo traffic, showcasing the port’s growing significance in the regional logistics landscape. Last year, the port processed approximately 60,000 multipurpose RoRo units, underscoring the efficiency and capacity of its operations.
The shift in maritime traffic patterns over the past six years is notable, with multipurpose vessels (MPVs) now surpassing pure car carriers in frequency at Limassol port. This trend reflects the diverse nature of cargo that the port is equipped to handle, beyond just passenger cars.
DP World Limassol boasts Cyprus’ largest RoRo terminal, complete with an expansive dedicated yard area exceeding 20,000 sq.m. This state-of-the-art facility operates around the clock, offering port users and customers enhanced flexibility, quicker cargo delivery times, and heightened efficiency within the terminal.
RoRo shipping, a cornerstone of the logistics sector, is particularly vital for island nations such as Cyprus. It provides a lifeline for the import and export of vehicles and heavy machinery. The method’s cost-effectiveness and adaptability to various types of wheeled cargo make it indispensable for the country’s economic activities.
Strategically positioned at the intersection of major European transport corridors, Limassol port serves as a crucial gateway for vehicle transportation to and from the Middle East and Europe. Renowned shipping lines including Salamis, Neptune Line, and Grimaldi rely on the port for their RoRo shipping needs.
Investments and Technological Advancements
DP World Limassol, in partnership with Eurogate, invested €1.9 billion for a 25-year concession, channeling funds into terminal improvements, equipment upgrades, and operational enhancements. The company’s operations span a wide array of services including break-bulk, general cargo, RoRo, oil & gas services, and passenger terminals.
The integration of Zodiac software into RoRo operations exemplifies DP World Limassol’s commitment to technological innovation. This bespoke system streamlines various processes such as manifest reception, customs clearance, damage documentation, and performance reporting.
Simon Pitout, CEO of DP World Limassol, emphasized the company’s pivotal role in supporting Cyprus’ automotive and construction industries. “We serve numerous industries and welcomed a wide range of vessels over the years,” he remarked. The reinstatement of the ferry link between Greece and Cyprus in 2021 after a two-decade hiatus is a testament to DP World Limassol’s dedication to enhancing Cyprus’ connectivity and tourism.
Pitout highlighted the upcoming summer schedule for the ferry link from Limassol port to Greece, which will provide Cypriots with the convenience of traveling with their vehicles. “By hosting the ferry link exclusively in Limassol this season, DPWL has demonstrated its commitment to strengthening Cyprus’ tourist industry,” he concluded.
