Ensuring Fair Prices: Agriculture Ministry Launches ‘e-Kofini’
In a significant move to promote fairness in the marketplace, the agriculture ministry has unveiled ‘e-Kofini’, a new price observatory for fruit and vegetable products. This innovative platform is designed to foster transparency and ensure that consumers are privy to fair pricing within the local market.
Accessible through the ministry’s official website, ‘e-Kofini’ will serve as a reliable source for the average selling prices of staple locally produced fruits and vegetables. By collating data from both producers and retail outlets, the observatory aims to shed light on the discrepancies in pricing across different sales points.
Officials from the ministry will diligently update the platform with fresh price data twice a week, guaranteeing that the information provided is both current and precise. The observatory keeps track of a variety of produce, ranging from everyday vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers to popular fruits such as bananas and strawberries.
The data for ‘e-Kofini’ is meticulously sourced from certified producer groups and organizations, as well as from supermarkets that have a national presence. The initial report released by the platform has already highlighted a significant markup in prices at retail points when compared to those set by producer groups.
For example, the disparity in pricing is stark with local bananas being sold at €0.50 per kilogram by producers, while retailers charge €1.35, marking an astonishing 170 percent increase. This pattern of inflated retail prices is consistent across various other fruits and vegetables, including red cabbage, cherry tomatoes, and green peppers.
The agriculture ministry anticipates that ‘e-Kofini’ will play a crucial role in aligning producer and retail prices, thereby safeguarding fair trading conditions for all parties involved in the fruit and vegetable supply chain. The ultimate goal is to enlighten consumers about the expected prices of local produce, thereby enhancing market transparency. Additionally, it aims to empower producers by providing them with vital information that can protect their interests in pricing.
Beyond the website, updates are also disseminated through a dedicated public communication channel on Viber titled “Τμήμα Γεωργίας e-κοφίνι”. For those seeking more information, Melpomeni Siakou, an Agriculture Officer at the Department of Agriculture, can be reached via email or phone.
