Easter Shopping Trends in Cyprus Amid Economic Strain
In the bustling aisles of Cyprus supermarkets, a familiar pattern emerges as Easter shopping reaches its crescendo. Andreas Hadjiadamou, chairman of the supermarkets’ association, observed that
Despite the economic challenges faced by many, Hadjiadamou confidently stated that Cypriot consumers are determined to maintain their festive spirit. “They do not miss anything when making purchases for Easter,” he affirmed, suggesting a resilience in cultural practices irrespective of financial pressures.
While it’s still early to draw comparisons with previous years’ footfall, Hadjiadamou anticipates that this year’s turnout will not disappoint. “We think with the experience we have that footfall will be at least on a par with last year,” he said, hinting at a stable or possibly improved market performance.
Addressing concerns over price increases, Hadjiadamou acknowledged the fluctuations in the market. He stressed the importance of restraint and justification in pricing strategies, assuring that supermarkets are working hard to offer fair prices by absorbing costs and negotiating with suppliers.
This commitment to fair pricing comes in light of a report by the consumer protection service highlighting significant price hikes in essential Easter items, such as olive oil, which has seen a staggering 105.9 percent increase since the last festive season.
Contrasting Hadjiadamou’s optimism, Stefanos Koursaris from the small shopkeepers’ association (Povek) painted a less rosy picture. He noted a shift in consumer behavior, with fewer people treating Easter as an occasion for new purchases. Koursaris pointed to “financial distress” from rising fuel and electricity costs, leading to more cautious spending focused on necessities.
As Cyprus consumers navigate through economic challenges, their approach to Easter shopping reflects a blend of tradition and adaptation, with an emphasis on essentials while preserving festive customs.
