Palestinian Doctor Dies in Israeli Custody
In a somber announcement, two Palestinian prisoner associations reported the death of Adnan Al-Bursh, a senior doctor and head of orthopedics at Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza. His death was labeled an “assassination” by the associations, which have pointed accusatory fingers at Israel following his more than four months of detention.
Al-Bursh had been working temporarily at Al-Awada Hospital in north Gaza when he was detained by Israeli forces. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, with his body still retained by Israeli authorities. The Israeli prison service, without delving into specifics, acknowledged a prisoner’s death on April 19 at Ofer prison, later confirming the individual was indeed Bursch. An investigation into the incident has been initiated.
The loss of medical personnel in the ongoing Gaza conflict has been a point of contention, with organizations like the World Health Organization condemning attacks on healthcare workers. Insecurity Insight estimates that over 200 healthcare professionals have been killed to date. The Palestinian health ministry’s recent statement escalates the count of medical workers killed by Israel to 496 since October 7, with an additional 1,500 wounded and 309 arrested.
Israel maintains that Hamas utilizes hospitals for military purposes, justifying their actions as necessary due to the presence of combatants—a claim both Hamas and medical staff refute. Meanwhile, the release of 64 Palestinians from Israeli detention has been reported, including the body of another deceased individual and a critically ill detainee requiring immediate hospitalization.
Allegations of mistreatment, including torture and deprivation of necessities, have surfaced from Palestinians previously detained by Israel. The recent deaths have increased the number of Gazans who have perished in Israeli custody to at least 18 since the conflict’s inception.
The U.N. Palestinian Refugee Agency has documented the release of 1,506 detainees through the Kerem Shalom crossing, noting that such transfers often delay aid delivery. These figures include children and women among those released.
The escalation in violence traces back to an October 7 attack by Hamas, which Israel claims resulted in 1,200 deaths and 253 hostages taken. In response, Israeli bombardment has led to over 33,000 Palestinian fatalities and displaced a significant portion of Gaza’s population, as per Palestinian medical sources.
