UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy Embarks on Third Visit to Cyprus
In a move that underscores the United Nations’ ongoing commitment to fostering dialogue in Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Cyprus, is set to embark on her third official visit to the Mediterranean island. The visit, scheduled from May 7 to 14, was announced by the UNSG spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a press briefing at the UN’s headquarters in New York.
During her stay, Holguín is slated to engage in a series of high-level meetings with key political figures. She will hold talks with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, aiming to further the dialogue between the two communities. The importance of these meetings cannot be overstated, as they represent a continued effort to bridge differences and promote peace on the divided island.
Moreover, Holguín’s agenda includes interactions with a “broad range of additional interlocutors,” indicating that her mission extends beyond the political elite to encompass various stakeholders in the Cypriot society. This inclusive approach is reflective of the UN’s strategy to engage multiple voices in the peace process and build a comprehensive understanding of the situation on the ground.
Prior to her arrival in Cyprus, Holguín’s diplomatic efforts took her to Brussels, where she met with European Union officials. Her itinerary also included visits to other capitals, which have not been specified, but suggest a concerted effort to garner international support for the UN’s initiatives in Cyprus.
The visit of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy is a testament to the international community’s unwavering support for a peaceful resolution in Cyprus. As Holguín prepares for her critical meetings, all eyes will be on the potential progress that can be made towards reconciliation and unity on the island.
