Manchester City Stars Clinch FWA Player of the Year Honors
In a remarkable nod to Manchester City’s talent-rich squad, Phil Foden and Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw have been crowned the Football Writers’ Association’s men’s and women’s players of the year, respectively. The announcement, made last Friday, marks a significant achievement for both players who have been instrumental in their club’s successes this season.
Foden, an England international, has been in stellar form, netting 24 goals across all competitions. His contributions have been pivotal, including a decisive goal that secured the Club World Cup final for his team. With a commanding 42% of the vote, Foden outpaced competitors such as Arsenal’s Declan Rice and fellow City midfielder Rodri. Upon receiving the news, Foden expressed his immense pride and a steadfast commitment to continuing his pursuit of excellence and silverware with Manchester City.
On the women’s side, Jamaican forward Khadija Shaw, known affectionately as ‘Bunny’, has had an equally impressive season. Despite a foot injury curtailing her campaign, Shaw’s impact remains undisputed as she stands as the Women’s Super League’s top scorer with 21 goals. Her prolific scoring has not only earned her the women’s award but also solidified her status as Manchester City’s all-time leading women’s scorer.
The dual victory for City players in these prestigious awards is not unprecedented; this is the second time in five years that the club has swept both accolades. Shaw edged out formidable talents such as Chelsea’s Lauren James and teammate Alex Greenwood to secure her victory.
Both Foden and Shaw are set to be honored at an awards ceremony scheduled for May 16. As their respective teams continue to compete at the top of their leagues—with Foden’s side trailing just behind Arsenal in the Premier League and Shaw’s team leading the WSL—the pair’s accolades underscore Manchester City’s dominance in English football.
