Authorities Urge Caution as Strong Winds Threaten Traditional Bonfire Celebrations
In the face of strong winds sweeping across Cyprus, the fire service has issued a warning regarding the upcoming Easter Saturday celebrations. The much-anticipated traditional bonfire may now pose a significant risk to residential areas, critical infrastructure, and the safety of individuals.
Andreas Kettis, a spokesman for the fire service, has called upon local authorities and citizens to take immediate action. He emphasized the importance of dismantling any accumulated piles of wood and waste that were intended to be ignited for the festivities. Kettis explained that due to the current weather conditions, thermal radiation from the fires is likely to spread horizontally rather than rising upwards, thereby increasing the hazard to nearby structures and people.
The urgency of this message was underscored by an incident earlier in the day when tyres were set ablaze, prompting heightened vigilance from both fire services and police forces. The incident, believed to involve two minors, led to early morning flames on Nikou and Despina Pattichi street, close to Spyrou Kyprianou avenue. The young suspects were escorted to a police station and are expected to provide statements in the coming days after their parents were notified.
Investigations are underway to determine if the smoke and flames from this incident had any impact on traffic cameras in the vicinity. Meanwhile, police and fire services are stepping up their patrols as a precautionary measure against any further incidents that might arise from the fire-related traditions.
