Efforts to Maintain Public Safety During Easter Celebrations
Over the Easter weekend, Police in Cyprus responded to various incidents, ensuring public safety amidst celebrations. The police force was on high alert, addressing concerns ranging from public nuisance complaints to more serious firework and cracker offenses, as well as tackling instances of youth delinquency.
They collaborated with the Fire Service to tackle fires and confiscate illegal fireworks and crackers, a joint effort that proved effective in preventing injuries. The authorities were particularly vigilant in seizing contraband related to fireworks, a common issue during festive periods.
In the capital city of Nicosia, a routine traffic stop led to the arrest of a 19-year-old driver. Upon inspection, police discovered 11 firework launchers and 115 crackers stashed in the trunk of his car. The young man now faces charges and awaits his day in court.
The crackdown extended to Larnaca, where two separate vehicle searches resulted in arrests. A 42-year-old woman and her child, along with a 49-year-old man and his offspring, were found in possession of fireworks and crackers. After questioning, these individuals were released but are expected to answer to the law at a later date.
In Paphos, another arrest was made when a 21-year-old was caught with 17 crackers near a place of worship. He too was charged and released pending further legal proceedings.
The most notable disturbance occurred in Kiti village, Larnaca. Youths engaging in reckless behavior ignited a bonfire and launched crackers at both officers and a resident’s property. The situation escalated when the fire spread to nearby trees. Quick response from the Fire Service, aided by police securing the area and managing traffic, prevented further escalation.
Despite initial police intervention, the group of youths returned, causing additional damage with crackers and stones before ultimately dispersing. The police continue to investigate these incidents, underscoring their commitment to maintaining order and ensuring the safety of the community during holiday festivities.
