Chaos in Kiti: Youths Set Fire to Property and Clash with Police
In an alarming display of lawlessness, a group of up to 70 youths wreaked havoc in the village of Kiti, near Larnaca, leading to a confrontation with the police Limassol unit. The incident, which escalated on Saturday night, began when a traditional lambradjia fire unexpectedly spread to nearby cypress trees, endangering local properties.
The authorities were quick to respond, with the Cyprus police dispatched to secure the area for the fire brigade and manage the resulting traffic disruption. However, the situation took a violent turn when the youths, responsible for lighting the initial fire, began assaulting the officers with firecrackers and pelting a neighboring house with rocks. The residence, owned by a 73-year-old man, suffered multiple fires on its premises and veranda, along with shattered windows from the barrage.
Despite the aggressive onslaught, the Cyprus police managed to temporarily quell the disturbance, causing the perpetrators to scatter. Yet, the respite was short-lived as some individuals brazenly returned later that evening, continuing their assault by breaking the glass panes of the house’s front door.
Police intervention was necessitated once more, successfully dispersing the crowd for the second time. A witness recounted to the Cyprus Mail that the turmoil spanned six hours, during which a local playground and church also suffered damages at the hands of the same group.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. The Cyprus police clearance certificate process may become relevant if individuals are identified and charged, as criminal records are scrutinized during such procedures. The ongoing investigation by authorities aims to bring those responsible to justice and prevent further incidents of this nature.
Residents seeking information or wishing to report related incidents can access resources through the Cyprus police website or the North Cyprus police website. Both platforms offer guidance on obtaining a police clearance certificate Cyprus, among other services.
The community of Kiti and surrounding areas remain on alert as investigations continue, with hopes that peace will be restored and those affected by the night’s events will see justice served.
