Jose Raul Mulino Triumphs in Panama’s Presidential Poll
In a decisive victory, Jose Raul Mulino won the presidential election in Panama, signaling a new era for the Central American nation. Mulino, a seasoned politician and former security minister, claimed approximately 34% of the votes with over 90% counted, surpassing his closest competitor Ricardo Lombana.
The election was notably influenced by the presence of Ricardo Martinelli, Mulino’s former boss and Panama’s ex-leader. Despite being confined within Nicaragua’s embassy in Panama and barred from running due to legal issues, Martinelli’s support proved pivotal. Mulino visited Martinelli after casting his vote, acknowledging their shared victory with the words, “Mission accomplished, damn it.”
Mulino’s ascent to power comes with the promise of Mulino’s pro-investment and pro-business government plans. He has vowed to honor Panama’s debts while also addressing the needs of the less fortunate. His commitment to establishing a government of unity was clear as he addressed electoral officials, emphasizing his dedication to bridging social divisions and fostering national cohesion.
The president-elect faces the formidable challenge of rejuvenating Panama’s economy and tackling corruption. Voters like Hayde Gonzalez express optimism about Mulino’s leadership, anticipating improvements in security and economic recovery. Similarly, Magali Rosa sees hope in Mulino for job creation and enhanced security.
Among the pressing issues awaiting Mulino is the controversy over the Cobre Panama mine. The mine’s closure, deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, has sparked protests and significant economic concerns. Moreover, Mulino will have to navigate a troubled pension fund system, high public debt levels, and the impact of migration through the perilous Darien Gap.
As Panama grapples with these challenges, all eyes will be on Mulino as he steps into office on July 1 for a five-year term. His administration will be closely watched for its approach to investment, infrastructure, and the overarching goal of uniting a country ready for change.
