Enhancing Cyprus’ Firefighting Capabilities with Jordanian Support
In a significant move to bolster its firefighting capabilities, Cyprus has welcomed two firefighting helicopters along with 18 skilled crew members from Jordan. This strategic deployment is set to reinforce the island’s preparedness as it approaches the fire-prone summer season. The arrival of these aerial assets was confirmed by the agriculture ministry on Tuesday.
The crew members were greeted at the Andreas Papandreou air base in Paphos by none other than Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou. During the warm reception, Minister Panayiotou detailed that the Jordanian helicopters and their crews would be stationed in Cyprus until the government’s leased aircraft are delivered. She assured that within a mere 24 hours, the teams would be “operationally ready” to tackle any fire emergencies that may arise.
Minister Panayiotou emphasized the critical nature of fire prevention in Cyprus, describing it as a “matter of national security.” With this perspective, the government is not only seeking immediate support but is also looking ahead with plans to acquire a total of ten aircraft for the National Guard, specifically dedicated to firefighting efforts.
Moreover, she highlighted that ground-level firefighting crews across Cyprus have been on full operational alert since the beginning of April. This readiness ensures that at least one crew is on standby around the clock, guaranteeing an island-wide response time of 30 minutes. Such rapid deployment capabilities are crucial in mitigating the risks and potential damages caused by wildfires.
The collaboration between Cyprus and Jordan showcases a proactive approach to disaster management, particularly in enhancing firefighting capabilities. With the summer season looming, the presence of firefighting helicopters and vigilant crew members is a reassuring sign for the residents of Cyprus. The commitment to fire prevention and response readiness reflects the government’s dedication to safeguarding its citizens and natural landscapes from the threat of fires.
