Enhancing Government Transparency in Agriculture
In a move to bridge the gap between producers and consumers, the Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou announced that over 1,200 individuals have joined the “e-Kofini” channel on Viber. This innovative channel is part of a broader initiative aimed at providing government transparency in the agricultural sector.
The “e-Kofini” platform, which operates in conjunction with the Viber channel, is a government-established service that lists retail prices for locally sourced produce. Minister Panayiotou highlighted the significance of this endeavor, stating that it represents the beginning of a concerted effort to narrow the price discrepancy experienced by producers and consumers.
By offering a clear view of both retail prices and what producers earn, the platform promotes transparency in the marketplace. Updated average prices for a variety of fruits and vegetables are made available every Monday and Thursday. These updates are accessible through the agriculture ministry’s website as well as the dedicated Viber channel.
The range of produce monitored by “e-Kofini” is extensive, including vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions, and fruits such as bananas and strawberries. The inaugural report from the platform revealed a significant markup at retail outlets, with some items being sold for more than double the price charged by producer groups.
This initiative is part of a broader commitment to ensure fair pricing and to empower consumers with information that can influence their purchasing decisions. By leveraging the “e-Kofini” platform, the government aims to foster a more equitable and transparent agricultural market.
