Ensuring a Safe Easter: Police Report No Firecracker Injuries
In a significant public safety achievement, authorities have reported that the recent Easter holidays passed without any injuries caused by firecrackers. This announcement came on Tuesday as part of a broader reflection on the holiday period’s security measures.
The absence of injuries is particularly noteworthy given the backdrop of a rigorous police crackdown on the illegal possession of fireworks and other explosives. The crackdown led to the confiscation of approximately 5,500 firecrackers across the island, and the subsequent charging of 12 individuals.
Police efforts to maintain public safety were multifaceted. Officers were deployed in various locations, with a focus on areas historically known for increased firecracker activity during the festivities. Special action plans were enacted to ensure a festive season marked by safety and a decrease in crime, injuries from firecrackers, and serious traffic incidents.
From Thursday of Holy Week, patrols and checks were intensified. “We [planned] for increased patrols and checks throughout the Holy Week, with intensified checks from Thursday [onwards], in locations where increased activity is observed every year [with] firecrackers and fireworks,” the police detailed in their statement.
In collaboration with local authorities, potentially hazardous materials such as piles of timber and flammable objects were removed from public spaces. Additionally, educational initiatives were launched to raise awareness among the youth about the dangers associated with firecrackers and similar hazards.
Churches, both in urban and rural settings, received special attention from law enforcement to ensure peace and security during this significant time. The police described their measures as “targeted, deterrent and effective.”
Despite these proactive measures, some serious incidents did occur. Notably, an arson attack involving teenagers with firecrackers targeted a house in Kiti. In Limassol, over 100 hooded youths organized an attack that resulted in a police car being set on fire. Furthermore, a fatal motorcycle collision marred the Easter Sunday celebrations.
These incidents underscore the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement, even as they celebrate the successes of their holiday safety initiatives.
