Crackdown on Untaxed Tobacco in Paphos Leads to Hefty Fines
In a recent sweep to clamp down on the circulation of untaxed tobacco items, Paphos police have imposed substantial fines on three individuals found in possession of such goods. The total fines amounted to a significant €21,500, reflecting the authorities’ stern stance against the illegal tobacco trade.
The first incident involved a 45-year-old man who was pulled over for a routine check while driving in Paphos. The search that ensued led to the discovery of a large haul of tobacco products, including 850 cigarette packets, 159 packets of rolling tobacco, and two boxes of shisha tobacco. The customs office was promptly notified, and the man faced a hefty €9,000 fine. After settling the fine, he was allowed to go free.
Meanwhile, in a separate case at Paphos airport last week, two men aged 45 and 66 were caught trying to leave with an assortment of tobacco items. Their luggage contained 645 packets of rolling tobacco and 65 boxes of cigarettes, all lacking the necessary tax stamps. The pair were collectively fined €12,500 for their attempt to smuggle untaxed tobacco. Like the previous offender, they were released following the payment of their fines.
The incidents underscore the ongoing efforts by Cypriot authorities to combat the illicit trade in tobacco products across the island. The substantial fines serve as a deterrent and a clear message that possession and distribution of untaxed tobacco will not be tolerated. These enforcement actions are part of a broader strategy to protect legal trade, public health, and government revenues.
