May 7th, recognized globally as the World Day of Reducing Harm, casts a spotlight on the importance of harm reduction—a philosophy and set of practical strategies aimed at minimizing the negative impacts associated with substance use when abstinence is not an immediate option.
The Cyprus Anti-Addiction Authority has been at the forefront of harm reduction efforts, as outlined in its National Strategy 2021-2028. Initiatives include the operation of the Immediate Access and Harm Reduction Centre “STOCHOS” in Nicosia, substitution therapy programs, and the distribution of harm reduction kits. Additionally, life-saving measures such as the provision of naloxone, overdose prevention education, and rapid diagnostic testing for infectious diseases are part of this comprehensive approach.
Furthermore, the “Care Zone” mobile unit extends the reach of harm reduction services, and concerted efforts are made to curb road accidents related to substance use. Minas emphasizes that harm reduction is not only effective but also cost-efficient, proving its worth across various interventions.
With unwavering determination, the Cyprus Anti-Addiction Authority continues to invest in harm reduction measures. This steadfast commitment aims to safeguard all citizens affected by addiction, directly or indirectly, ensuring that the fabric of society is strengthened through care, support, and progressive policies.
