Expanding Support for Those Battling Addiction and Homelessness
In a significant move to bolster addiction support, the National Addiction Authority has declared its commitment to establishing a ‘one stop’ centre dedicated to aiding those grappling with addiction and homelessness. The announcement was made on Tuesday, aligning with the principles celebrated on International Harm Reduction Day, observed annually on May 7.
Christos Minas, the head of the addiction authority, emphasized the centre’s goal to provide harm reduction services for individuals not yet prepared to cease substance use. This harm reduction approach is designed to offer practical assistance while simultaneously working to mitigate the negative outcomes linked to substance use. However, details regarding the location and opening date of the centre remain unspecified.
The authority’s national strategy from 2021 to 2028 underscores its commitment to harm reduction measures throughout Cyprus. Notable initiatives include the operation of the Direct Access and Harm Reduction Centre ‘Stochos’ in Nicosia, as well as various treatment programs available nationwide, including those in prisons. A key component of this strategy is the administration of naloxone, an opioid ‘antidote’, coupled with overdose prevention training.
Furthermore, the strategy encompasses providing rapid diagnostic tests for Hepatitis B, C, and HIV in treatment facilities. It also promotes the ‘Care Zone’ mobile unit, which extends harm reduction services to various locations, and spearheads campaigns aimed at reducing road accidents caused by driving under the influence of substances.
Minas advocates for the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of harm reduction, asserting its successful application across diverse interventions. The Cyprus Addiction Treatment Authority intends to continue investing in these methods, striving to offer comprehensive protection for all citizens impacted by addiction. The designation of May 7 as International Harm Reduction Day serves as a reminder of the significance of reducing risks associated with substance use disorder.
