Limassol Police Progress in Easter Saturday Arson Case
In a recent development, Limassol police have apprehended a second suspect in the police car torching incident that occurred on Easter Saturday night. The suspect, a 19-year-old male, is scheduled to appear before the Limassol court for a remand hearing on Thursday. This follows the arrest of a 21-year-old man on Tuesday, who has since been remanded for four days.
Police spokesman Lefteris Kyriakou has been providing updates on the investigation, which remains active. He previously characterized the incident as an “organized attack” after a police vehicle was set ablaze near the village of Ypsonas in Limassol. The attack unfolded when officers responded to reports of youths armed with Molotov cocktails.
According to the police, the situation escalated when approximately 100 individuals began hurling Molotov cocktails, firecrackers, and rocks at the responding officers. Riot police were called to the scene and managed to disperse the attackers using tear gas. Despite their efforts, the assailants succeeded in setting one police car on fire and causing material damage to four others.
Kyriakou has suggested that the arson may have been a retaliatory act against the increased police patrols and checkpoints established in anticipation of the Easter celebrations. The arrests made thus far indicate a serious response from law enforcement to what they consider an organized attack on public safety.
The community awaits further developments as the authorities continue their pursuit of justice in this case that has challenged the peace of the Easter period.
