AstraZeneca Commences Global COVID-19 Vaccine Withdrawal
In a significant shift reflecting the evolving landscape of the pandemic, AstraZeneca has announced the initiation of a worldwide withdrawal of its COVID-19 vaccine, Vaxzevria, citing a
The pharmaceutical giant also confirmed that it would be retracting Vaxzevria’s marketing authorizations across Europe. The move comes after the recognition that the vaccine is no longer in production or being distributed. The decision to halt the vaccine’s use aligns with the broader industry trend where updated vaccines are becoming the preferred choice for ongoing inoculation efforts against COVID-19.
Media outlets have highlighted that AstraZeneca faced challenges with Vaxzevria after court documents revealed the vaccine was linked to rare side effects, including blood clots and low blood platelet counts. The formal application to cease the vaccine’s authorization was submitted on March 5 and became effective as of May 7, as reported by the Telegraph.
Further emphasizing the shift in production priorities, the Serum Institute of India (SII), which had been manufacturing the AstraZeneca vaccine under the name Covishield, ceased its production and supply in December 2021. An SII spokesperson confirmed this cessation, marking an end to one of the world’s most widely distributed COVID-19 vaccines.
As AstraZeneca pivots away from its COVID-19 vaccine efforts, the company has begun to focus on other areas of healthcare. Last year, AstraZeneca expanded its portfolio by venturing into respiratory syncytial virus vaccines and obesity drugs through a series of strategic deals, adapting to the post-pandemic market where COVID-19 medicine sales have seen a downturn.
