Humanitarian Aid Efforts for Gaza Intensify
In a significant development, the US Ambassador to Cyprus, Julie Fisher, has confirmed that the construction of a floating platform for aid delivery is in its final stages, with the aim to facilitate humanitarian aid to Gaza. During a meeting with the President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, Ambassador Fisher highlighted the critical role of the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Larnaca port authorities in establishing a humanitarian corridor.
Ambassador Fisher expressed her satisfaction with the current state of US-Cyprus relations, noting that their collaborative efforts extend beyond humanitarian assistance to include law enforcement and military cooperation. She emphasized the importance of the Eastern Mediterranean’s stability and the shared commitment to bringing Cypriots and Americans closer together.
Addressing the readiness of the pier being constructed by the Americans, Fisher mentioned that while it is nearly complete, sea conditions are currently preventing its relocation to Gaza. She remains hopeful for a swift change that would allow for the platform’s deployment.
The Ambassador also praised the work being done at the port of Larnaca to prepare and palletise food supplies. She acknowledged the dedication of those who continued their efforts through the holiday weekend to expedite the delivery of desperately needed aid to Gaza.
The possibility of regular aid shipments from Cyprus was discussed, with Ambassador Fisher affirming the intention to use this route and any other means necessary to continue providing assistance for as long as it is required.
Adding to these statements, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis confirmed that the floating platform’s construction is complete. The platform is poised for relocation to Gaza as soon as weather conditions are favorable. He also noted that cargo loading onto an American ship at Larnaca is nearing completion, setting the stage for the next phase of aid delivery once the platform reaches its destination.
