Google Faces Mass Lawsuit in London Over Ad Market Dominance
In a significant legal development, Google’s parent company Alphabet (GOOGL.O) is confronting a substantial legal challenge in the United Kingdom. A London tribunal has been petitioned to halt a mass lawsuit accusing the tech behemoth of monopolistic practices in the online advertising sector. This case adds to a growing list of legal battles centered on Google’s business operations.
The lawsuit in question is demanding a staggering 13.6 billion pounds ($16.9 billion) in damages. It represents UK-based website and app publishers who claim they have incurred financial losses due to Google’s alleged anticompetitive behavior. The legal team from Ad Tech Collective Action has requested the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) to approve the case for trial proceedings, which commenced with a three-day hearing on Wednesday.
Google, on the other hand, has dismissed the lawsuit as unfounded, arguing that it fails to coherently link any purported anticompetitive actions to actual harm suffered by the publishers. Robert O’Donoghue, representing Ad Tech Collective Action, described the London lawsuit as part of a broader pattern of cases against Google for prioritizing its services unfairly.
The backdrop to this lawsuit includes ongoing investigations by regulatory bodies such as Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority and the European Commission into Google’s advertising technology operations. Notably, O’Donoghue highlighted that the European Commission’s findings are expected shortly. He also mentioned previous hefty fines imposed on Google by the Commission related to its shopping search service and Android mobile device practices.
Google is concurrently defending itself against two lawsuits in the United States—one from the Department of Justice and another backed by Texas and several other states—both alleging anticompetitive conduct by the company. Despite these allegations, Google maintains that its influence in the ad tech industry has been “hugely procompetitive,” as stated by its legal representatives in court documents for the CAT case.
This proposed lawsuit by Ad Tech Collective Action is among several high-profile cases targeting tech giants at the CAT this year, including a $3.8 billion lawsuit against Facebook’s parent company Meta (META.O) and a nearly $1 billion case against Apple (AAPL.O).
