Telephone Scam Leads to Major Robbery in Nicosia
In a disconcerting turn of events, a 72-year-old woman from Nicosia became the latest victim of a telephone scam, losing a significant amount of her savings. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon, saw the elderly woman defrauded out of €52,000 in a meticulously orchestrated crime.
The scam began with a phone call the woman received around 2pm. An individual, posing as a surgeon from the Nicosia general hospital, contacted her on her landline. The imposter spun a tale of urgency, claiming that her son had been in an accident and required immediate surgical intervention. To add to the authenticity of his story, another voice, supposedly that of her son, could be heard crying and corroborating the fabricated accident.
The caller’s demands were steep, requesting €57,000 for the alleged medical procedure. In a state of panic and believing her son’s life to be in danger, the woman complied by preparing €52,000. The situation escalated when an accomplice arrived at her residence to collect the money. In a bold move, the suspect took the bag of cash that was thrown from the balcony and made a swift getaway.
The police investigation into this heartless act is currently underway by the Nicosia CID. The authorities have issued a statement highlighting the cunning nature of such scams. They are advising the public to exercise caution with unexpected telephone communications demanding money. The police emphasize that these claims are often fraudulent and designed to exploit vulnerable individuals, particularly targeting the elderly.
As the community reels from this incident, there is a collective effort to spread awareness about such scams. The police are urging anyone who receives similar calls to report them immediately and not to engage with the callers. The hope is that increased vigilance will prevent future occurrences of this nature and protect potential victims from falling prey to such deceitful tactics.
