The presence of this particular species is alarming due to its ability to transmit a variety of diseases, including dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika fever, Mayaro, and yellow fever viruses. The Aedes aegypti is easily identifiable by its distinctive black and white markings on its legs and a lyre-shaped marking on its thorax.
The municipality’s recent statement highlighted that the spraying operations have encompassed several key areas. These include Alykes at Spyros Beach, the vicinity of the old airport, Hala Tekke, Faneromeni Avenue, the old Shooting Range, and stretches of Vergina and the industrial zone. In addition to these targeted areas, officers are also addressing potential breeding grounds in urban settings, such as rainwater grates and construction sites where stagnant water is present.
Furthering their proactive approach, health ministry officials are conducting door-to-door visits to educate residents about the risks associated with these mosquitoes and ways to mitigate them. The Larnaca municipality has issued a call to action for its residents to eliminate any standing water within their properties, especially after recent rainfall. They emphasize that even small amounts of water can serve as breeding sites for mosquitoes, posing a threat to entire communities.
