Efforts Intensify to Control Ayios Sylas Blaze
In the industrial outskirts of Limassol, a fierce fire has pushed emergency services to their limits. The blaze, which ignited around 11 am in Ayios Sylas, has been described as ‘raging out of control’ by local authorities. As the flames threaten to encroach upon the industrial heartland, a coordinated response involving ground and air assets is underway.
Andreas Kettis, the spokesperson for the fire service, detailed the extensive measures being taken to combat the inferno. Among the aerial resources are firefighting aircraft from various departments, including a helicopter from the British Bases. This international effort underscores the severity of the situation and the need for a robust, multi-agency approach.
The ground response is equally formidable, with four fire trucks from the Limassol Fire Service at the forefront, supported by teams from organized volunteer groups such as “KITAS” and “SOS.” These groups have been instrumental in providing additional manpower and expertise in firefighting efforts.
Complicating the firefighting operations are the strong winds whipping through the area, which have accelerated the spread of the fire. The wind’s unpredictability has made it difficult for responders to anticipate the fire’s path and has necessitated a dynamic approach to resource allocation and tactical decision-making.
With assets such as an airplane from the forestry department and a police helicopter also joining the fray, there is a concerted push to bring the fire under control before it can inflict significant damage on Ayios Sylas’s industrial facilities. The community watches anxiously as brave firefighters and volunteers work tirelessly to quell the flames that have disrupted an otherwise peaceful day in Limassol.
