White House Comments on Rafah Operation
In a recent briefing, the White House conveyed President Joe Biden’s stance on the proposed Israeli military action in Rafah, Gaza. John Kirby, a spokesman, emphasized that the President does not see a major Rafah operation as a means to effectively achieve Israel’s goal of
“Smashing into Rafah, in his view, will not advance that objective,” Kirby stated, addressing the potential consequences of such an operation. He highlighted that Israel has already exerted considerable pressure on Hamas and suggested that alternative strategies could be more effective and less harmful to civilians.
The recent talks in Cairo aimed at negotiating a hostage-release deal have stalled, with no agreement reached. Despite this, an Israeli official has indicated that Israel’s plans for Rafah will continue as intended.
Kirby also touched upon the ongoing U.S.-Israel consultations, which are exploring different approaches to address the situation without resorting to a large-scale ground operation. He acknowledged the complexities involved and called for leadership and moral courage from both parties to reach a resolution.
The White House spokesman reiterated America’s support for Israel but expressed hope that Israel would reconsider its planned offensive in the densely populated area of Rafah. “That’s a choice that Israel will have to make,” Kirby said. “And it’s one we hope they don’t.”
