Firefighters Control Limassol Wildfire Amidst Challenges

In a swift response to an emergency, firefighters have managed to control a wildfire that broke out in the Agios Sylas industrial area of Limassol. The fire, which started at midday on Thursday, rapidly consumed approximately six square kilometers of land before being contained by early evening. Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis confirmed the success of the firefighting efforts but cautioned that the situation remains precarious.

The industrial zone was under threat, prompting the creation of a firebreak to the west of the industries, which proved instrumental in protecting the area. Additionally, residences and several properties were shielded from the blaze. Despite the main firefront being under control, firefighters faced challenges with the northwestern section, where flames continued to spread unchecked.

To bolster their response, the Fire Service recalled personnel and evacuated all workers from the industrial area as a precautionary measure. A robust contingent of emergency services was deployed, including the Department of Forests, British Bases, aerial support from various agencies, Provincial Administration, Civil Defence, Game Fund Service, and volunteer groups. The operation saw more than 20 firefighting vehicles and four aircraft from both the Republic and the British Bases in action.

However, strong winds forecasted for the following day could still pose a challenge to their efforts. Kettis highlighted that firefighting forces are positioned perimetrically and will continue to work tirelessly through the night to secure the area and prevent any potential rekindling.

An initial assessment of the damage will be carried out once it is safe to do so. Meanwhile, authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. As emergency services remain vigilant, updates on the situation are expected to follow.
