Senior Citizen Targeted in Telephone Scam
In a recent development, a 61-year-old man has been taken into custody as part of a police investigation into a telephone scam. The arrest, which occurred on Thursday evening, is connected to an incident involving an 83-year-old woman who was defrauded of €650.
The elderly victim reported to the authorities that she had been contacted by an “unknown man” via her landline. The caller deceitfully claimed that her grandson was in urgent need of surgery and required money for the operation. In a distressing turn of events, a man later arrived at her residence to collect the cash sum.
Upon realization that she had fallen prey to a scam, the woman alerted the police. The subsequent police investigation led to the discovery of ties between the suspect and the fraudulent scheme, culminating in his arrest. During interrogation, the suspect presented “various allegations,” which are currently under scrutiny.
The accused is slated for a court appearance on Friday. Meanwhile, the police continue their diligent inquiry into the scam. In light of this incident, law enforcement officials have issued a warning to the public. They urge citizens to exercise “special attention” when receiving phone calls soliciting funds, emphasizing that such requests are typically “false” and designed to swindle individuals out of their money.
Authorities are advising anyone who encounters similar calls to immediately report them to the police. This proactive measure is crucial in preventing further occurrences of this nature and safeguarding the community from potential scams.
