Streamlining Support for Turkish Cypriots
In a recent meeting of the Labour Advisory Body, Labour Minister Yannis Panagiotou outlined new measures aimed at bolstering the welfare of Turkish Cypriots. Among the key topics was the enhancement of the process for distributing widowhood pensions to eligible spouses of Turkish Cypriots who have made contributions to the Social Insurance Fund (SIF).
The Ministry of Labour, in a joint effort with the Law Office, is refining the application procedure for these pensions. The new system will require less paperwork, as married Turkish Cypriot contributors will be able to submit a joint affidavit to confirm their marital status, akin to the protocols followed by the General Healthcare System (GHS). This initiative is part of a broader effort by The Ministry of Labour to simplify the application process, thereby expediting the delivery of benefits to qualified individuals.
Furthermore, Minister Panagiotou discussed measures to support Turkish Cypriots, including their participation in human resources development initiatives. The Productivity Centre, in collaboration with the Human Resources Development Authority, has planned a series of vocational training programmes. These sessions, which will be conducted in Turkish from May to December 2024, are designed to impart green and digital skills that are pertinent to current economic shifts. Additionally, they will provide insights into the European acquis.
The training programmes are not only a step towards enhancing vocational skills but also an inclusive move to integrate Turkish Cypriots into broader economic development plans. With up to 1,000 spots available for enrolment, these initiatives are set to open new opportunities for personal and professional growth among Turkish Cypriot communities.
