Health Risks and Recommendations
In light of the elevated PM10 levels detected, the Department of Labour Inspection has alerted the public to the potential health risks associated with the current dust episode. Vulnerable groups are advised to avoid spending time outdoors, particularly children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. The small particles, when inhaled, can lead to adverse health effects, making it imperative for these groups to minimize their exposure by staying indoors until the situation improves.
Employers’ Responsibilities
Businesses that operate in outdoor environments are now under scrutiny to adhere to stringent safety protocols. The Department mandates compliance with the “Safety and Health at Work (Code of Practice for the Protection of Persons at Work During Dust Episodes) Order of 2022 (P. I. 410/2022).” This includes a thorough assessment of the risks posed to employees and the implementation of measures to mitigate them. Employers are also encouraged to ensure that their outdoor workers are equipped with the necessary personal protective equipment to safeguard their health during this period.
Dust Concentration Levels
The Department has provided a detailed account of the PM10 concentrations recorded at 8:00 AM in various locales:
