Novak Djokovic Struck by Water Bottle at Italian Open
In an unexpected turn of events, Novak Djokovic, the world’s top-ranked tennis player, required medical attention after a water bottle incident at the Italian Open. The Serbian champion had just secured a second-round victory over France’s Corentin Moutet with a score of 6-3, 6-1 when the incident occurred.
While engaging with his fans and signing autographs, Djokovic was struck in the head by a water bottle. The impact caused him to clutch his head and drop to his knees. Concerned staff and medical personnel were quick to respond, attending to Djokovic on the spot. Despite the alarming scene, tournament organizers assured that there was no serious concern regarding Djokovic’s condition.
A statement from the tournament organizers clarified the situation: “Novak Djokovic on leaving the Central Court at the end of his match was hit on the head by a water bottle while signing autographs (for) spectators.” They added that Djokovic received “appropriate medication” and had returned to his hotel to rest.
Social media was abuzz with footage suggesting that the water bottle had accidentally slipped out of a fan’s backpack, leading to the unfortunate mishap. While Reuters could not immediately verify the authenticity of the footage, the tennis community expressed relief that the incident was not more serious.
Djokovic himself took to social media platform X to address his fans’ concerns, stating, “Thank you for the messages of concern. This was an accident and I am fine resting at the hotel with an ice pack. See you all on Sunday.” His message reassured fans and fellow players alike that he would be ready to continue his pursuit of the Italian Open title.
The incident has highlighted the importance of safety for players even in seemingly secure environments like post-match interactions. As Djokovic prepares for his next match, fans are hopeful that this will be the last unexpected challenge he faces on his way to potentially claiming another title.
