Biden’s Tongue-in-Cheek Remark on Trump’s Bleach Comment
At a recent fundraising event, U.S. President Joe Biden brought up a controversial suggestion made by former President Donald Trump during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. With a touch of humor, Biden recalled Trump’s infamous remark about injecting disinfectant as a possible treatment for the virus. The quip came as part of Biden’s critique of Trump’s tenure in the White House, as the two political figures gear up for a competitive race in the upcoming November election.
Biden’s jest referenced a press briefing in 2020 where Trump pondered whether an “injection inside” with substances like bleach could combat the coronavirus. While the comment drew widespread disbelief and concern from medical professionals at the time, Biden used it to underscore what he views as the chaotic nature of Trump’s presidency. “Remember him saying the best thing to do is just inject a little bleach in your arm? That’s what he said. And he meant it. I wish he had done a little bit himself,” Biden remarked to his audience south of San Francisco.
The President also playfully mentioned Trump’s correspondence with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, albeit with a small gaffe, mistakenly referring to Kim as the president of South Korea. Trump, known for his unconventional diplomatic efforts, had kept copies of his exchanges with Kim in a binder during his time in office.
While the Trump campaign has not immediately commented on Biden’s statements, this is not the first instance where Biden has poked fun at the bleach incident. In April, during an event in Washington, he joked that Trump must have injected himself with the substance, leading it to affect his hair.
As the political landscape heats up ahead of the elections, such moments of levity bring a lighter tone to the otherwise intense and high-stakes environment of campaign trails and election rhetoric.
