Teenager Remanded Over Alleged Gun Threat at Youth Facility
In a recent development that has raised concerns over safety in youth care institutions, a 16-year-old boy was remanded in custody by the Paphos district court following allegations of threatening behavior involving a gun. The incident reportedly unfolded at a youth facility in Paphos, where the teenager was residing.
Details emerged when two fellow residents, aged 14 and 16, approached the central Paphos police station with a serious complaint. They claimed that in the early hours of the previous night, the accused had entered their room brandishing what appeared to be a gun and demanded their mobile phones. This alarming event prompted immediate action from law enforcement.
Police spokesperson Michalis Nicolaou confirmed that a subsequent arrest was made on Sunday, following the issuance of a court order. A thorough search of the suspect’s room led to the discovery of the weapon in question. Upon examination, it was revealed that the gun was not real. However, its use in the alleged threat against the minors was taken seriously by authorities.
The suspect’s appearance before the court on Monday resulted in a three-day remand as investigations continue. This case has brought to light the pressing need for stringent security measures and support systems within facilities catering to vulnerable youth populations.
